Mit dem ›Erec‹ - entstanden zwischen 1180 und 1190 - eröffnet Hartmann von Aue die Tradition des höfischen Artusromans in der deutschen Literatur. Er leistet damit für den deutschen Sprachraum, was zuvor Chrétien de Troyes (u. a. mit ›Érec et Énide‹) für Frankreich geleistet hat. Die historische Artusgestalt - ein kymrischer Stammeshäuptling um 500 n. Chr. - ist hier zur Verkörperung eines Systems von Idealvorstellungen geworden, die sich am ehesten als Synthese weltlich-kämpferischer Tugenden, geistlicher Normen und ästhetischer Ansprüche beschreiben lassen und in dem Begriff ›ritterlich‹ zusammenlaufen. Ritter Erec hat durch sein ›verligen‹ bei Enite, die er im Turnierkampf gewonnen hat, seinen Aufenthalt am Artushof verwirkt. In einer Reihe von Bewährungsproben, den ›aventiuren‹, büßt der Ritter seine Verfehlung ab, bis er sich wieder als der Artusrunde würdig erweist.
Die vorliegende Ausgabe stützt sich auf die von Albert Leitzmann erarbeitete Edition (Halle 1939). Die Übersetzung des Berliner Germanisten Thomas Cramer folgt dem Gebot möglichst großer Zeilentreue und will das Original nicht ersetzen, sondern erschließen. Das Nachwort gibt Aufschluß über die literarhistorische Rezeption und Interpretation des ›Erec‹.
